The first 25,000 that sign up will get a special Million Mums white ribbon pin, designed by Sarah Ferguson.

The sad truth

In some parts of the world, when a woman goes into labour, her family kiss her goodbye…because according to the African saying, a pregnant woman has one foot in the grave.
In Niger, 1 in 7 women risk dying in childbirth; here in the UK, our lifetime risk is 1 in 82,00.
And in Sierra Leone, girls are more likely to die in childbirth than they are to go to school.

Why?

  • In many countries, most notably in Africa and South Asia, half of all women give birth alone or with no skilled midwife, nurse or doctor to help, and as a result, every minute of every day a woman loses her life while giving life. If she dies, her baby is ten times more likely to die too. ( This puts our recent survey of maternity care in the UK in a whole new light)
  • In Sub-Saharan Africa, almost 80% of women who need care each year for complications of pregnancy and delivery do not receive it.

What does it mean?

500,000 women die in childbirth every year leaving behind two million orphans. So, please join the Million Mums Campaign – by doing so you can help make a difference. If you can’t afford to donate anything, please still sign up to pledge your support. If you can give something as well it will really help to make a difference 1, 10, 20…whatever you can afford. The first 25,000 mums who make a donation will also receive a million mums pin designed and donated by Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York.
